Patient Safety in Plastic Surgery

Patient Safety in Cosmetic Surgery
Saturday June 2, 2007
New York City
With the growing prevalence and public acceptance of plastic surgery it becomes increasingly important that Board-certified plastic surgeons and other clinicians be able to ensure maximum patient safety before, during and after cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Dr. Silich was asked to serve as the program director for "Patient Safety in Cosmetic Surgery", a one day symposium, co-presented by Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Weill Medical College of Cornell University in June of 2007. The symposium was the first of its kind and brought together a wide variety of experienced practitioners with expertise in all main areas of cosmetic surgery. In addition to lectures and case presentations, attendees included an audience of plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists, dermatologists and other clinicians, who had the opportunity to participate in panel discussions where Dr. Silich answered many questions.
Some of the topics Dr. Silich spoke on:
• Potential patient safety pitfalls and complications in the most common cosmetic surgery procedures
• How to better identify, understand and assess patients at high risk for safety problems and complications
• How physicians can have a broader understanding of pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative methods and techniques that minimize complications associated with a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures
